Affordable Solar Installation at Home in India in 2025: Who Should Opt for Solar?

  • Homeowners with high electricity bills

Homeowners with high electricity bills can significantly benefit from rooftop solar by generating their electricity, reducing their reliance on the grid, and potentially eliminating or compensating for their monthly utility costs with net metering.

  • People Living in Areas With Good Exposure to Sunlight

Installing solar panels in areas with abundant exposure to sunlight throughout the day leads to improved energy production. This ultimately leads to electricity cost cuts and better returns on investments.

  • Those looking for sustainability and long-term savings

Rooftop solar offers sustainability and significant long-term savings with reduced electricity bills, greater energy independence, and a cleaner environment. Some of the long-term savings related to rooftop solar include:

  • Reduced Electricity Bills
  • Energy Independence
  • Increased Property Value
  • Low Maintenance Costs
  • Financial Incentives

Sustainability benefits of solar installation in the home:

  • Reduced Carbon Footprint
  • Minimizing Environmental Impact
  • Promoting a Sustainable Future
  • Clean Air
  • Renewable Energy Source

Affordable Solar Installation at Home in India in 2025: Are You a Good Fit for Rooftop Solar?

To understand whether you are a good fit for rooftop solar, you have to first analyze your electricity consumption and bill. You can conduct this analysis by

  • Reviewing your past bills
  • Calculating your monthly consumption
  • Calculating your daily consumption
  • Identifying the times when your usage is at its peak. (This helps determine the best time for you to use solar power.)

As the next step, you should assess your solar potential by:

  • Determining the average sunlight hours in your location
  • Considering the tilt and orientation of your roof
  • Researching the efficiency of the panels you choose

You can calculate the size of your solar installation at home by:

  • Determining your daily energy needs
  • Calculating the needed number of panels by dividing daily energy requirements by the average daily output of each panel
  • Considering the derate factor (representation of potential losses in the system in percentage)
  • Understanding the net metering of your solar system.

Solar Power on Rooftop: Important Factors to Consider Before Solar Installation at Home

  • Type of solar panel:

You can choose among on-grid, off-grid, or hybrid solar panels by assessing your budget, needs, and location.

On-Grid Systems: These systems use solar panels to generate electricity. They are also connected to the electricity grid. While using the on-grid system, you can send excess power after meeting the requirements of your home or business back to the grid.

Off-Grid Systems: These systems use solar panels, inverters, and batteries to use and store solar energy while being fully independent of the electricity grid.

Hybrid Systems: These systems allow you to use solar power while also being connected to the grid. The grid also stores the surplus energy generated by the system.

  • Quality and efficiency of solar panels:

The quality and efficiency of solar panels are crucial to

  • Maximize energy generation
  • Lower electricity bills
  • Speed up payback periods
  • Increase overall savings
  • Reduce environmental footprint

  • Battery storage options and inverter selection:

The right inverter and battery storage for your solar installation at home can maximize energy independence, reduce dependence on the grid, and ensure a reliable power supply during outages.

  • Installation costs of solar panels for your home and their maintenance in the long term:

A successful solar installation at home also includes careful consideration of installation costs and maintenance requirements in the long term. These factors significantly affect the sustainability and overall return on investment of your solar system.

Affordable Solar Installation at Home in India in 2025: Wattsun’s Step-by-Step Guide on Going Solar

    • Step 1: Assess your energy needs.

As the initial step of solar installation at home, we analyze your KSEB bill to determine your daily power needs in units. If you are billed monthly, we divide the total units consumed in a month by 30, and if it is a bi-monthly bill, we divide the total units by 60 to calculate daily units. Daily units are then divided by 4 units (average daily power produced by a 1 KW system) to calculate the capacity of the plant.

    • Step 2: Site inspection and selecting the right rooftop solar setup

During the second stage of solar installation at home, we arrange a site visit during which our engineer analyzes the shadow and feasibility of transformer connection, grid connection, and net metering. We won't proceed with the installation if we cannot arrive at transformer feasibility for a particular project.

    • Step 3: Selecting the correct type of panel for solar installation at home

We select the correct type of panel for a project based on the consumer's demands. We undertake both on-grid and hybrid installations. Monofacial and bifacial panels are popular among our customers. We often suggest technologies of mono PERC and half cut for our customers. Another popular solar cell structure is TOPCon (Tunnel Oxide Passivated Contact).

    • Step 4: Solar installation at home

Once the quote we prepared gets approved by the customers, we proceed with the work order with an advance payment of 50% of the total charges. It takes around 2 and 3 days to install systems of capacities 3 KW and 5 KW, respectively.

    • Step 5: Applying for government subsidies and incentives

The KSEB paperwork and documentation for subsidies are processed after the installation. A Domestic Content Requirement (DCR) panel without a subsidy would cost within 2 lakhs, while with a subsidy, a customer will be spending only up to 1.4 lakhs on a 3KW system.

Finally, the wheeling of the solar power across Kerala could be arranged one month after the installation of the solar panel.
